Tech Talk April 10th

CI Tech Talk
April 10, 2014
1:00-3:00pm
Room 001 in the 4545 building

This Tech Talk will be unconference format – a participant-driven meeting.
We’ll convene in room 001 at 1:00pm and form our agenda.
Agenda topics will be seeded from this forum.
We’ll vote on topics and assign them to rooms and times.
We’ll reconvene at the end to share highlights.

What topics would like to discuss at this Tech Talk?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Automated deployments using Ansible

Last year we conducted a search for a platform for automating our Django app deployments. After looking at several tools, we chose Ansible, and we now have three of our software projects using it.

    • API Documentation tools and examples

I recently documented a REST API, and I'm wondering what tools people are using to do this--some of my colleagues use some sort of auto-generating framework like Swagger. I'm wondering what tools like this people like, and what is a good alternative if auto-generating the documentation isn't an option.

      • Server-side JavaScript

Just how great/horrible is the trend toward server-side JavaScript? What are the pros, the cons, the ups, the downs? Who's using Node.js now?

        • Using Elasticsearch, websockets, and oauth to build a subject finder

Combining these three ingredients builds a fast, flexible and secure people finder service that can be used by any web application.

          • Using websockets to assist service visualization

It can be difficult to visualize the state of a busy, remote service, especially when the tools (e.g. tomcat status) rely on components of the very service that may be stressed. Websocket technology allows continuous status updates, from multiple hosts, to a single web page display. And it can be independent of the service's own components. Can include a demo.

            • Geo-redundancy Approach With Clouds/VM's

My group has been discussing purchase requirements for spinning up a new service. I got to wondering why we need to pay for extra servers for geo-redundancy, when we are running on all VM's/cloud. It seems like the type of thing that there may be a better solution for. Maybe the needs in a virtualized world aren't the same. In the end there needs to be a host to attach an image to, and the file to attach no? Anyway, I don't have answers, nor do I have the sysadmin perspective. This would be a discussion that would hopefully draw…

              • Searching Windows Event Logs Using PowerShell

I recently needed to search for specific events in our very large DC security logs and decided that PowerShell was the way to go. I found some great pointers on the web, and that combined with my experimentation yielded some really useful information about the structure of log messages and the techniques that can be used from within PowerShell.
